When the fish have grown big and fine, they are transported by boat to Firda Seafood`s modern processing plant Martin E. Birknes Eftf, SF 364. The plant is located in Gulen community, and is well operated by its 50 employees.
Martin E. Birknes Eftf AS was founded in 1919. It began with lobster canning, and later various canned products (sardines, sprat, crab), followed by fish cakes, fish puddings, etc. In the 1980s salmon harvesting began.
Firda bought into the company in 1998 as a co-owner together with the Birknes family. In 2009, we bought the remaining shares, thus making Martin E. Birkness Eftf AS part of the FIRDA SEAFOOD GROUP AS. In addition to slaughtering our own salmon and fjord trout, we also slaughter for external fish farmers. We pack 150 tones of both fresh and frozen fish in one shift.
The fish is monitored in holding cages before being processed. During the actual processing, approved methods and equipment are used to ensure the anesthesia and the most humane dispatch.
All fish processing is done in compliance with stringent regulatory requirements and international standards. Correct handling, both before and during the actual processing, is particularly important to ensure good fish welfare in all areas and thereby a better quality finished product that is sold to consumers.
